Editorial Review for Whitefish Dunes State Park – by J.P. Anderson
Features
Children busily build sand castles while older folks sunbathe along the 6,000 feet of sandy beach at this popular Sturgeon Bay park. While most visitors are here for the sand and crashing Lake Michigan surf, Whitefish Dunes also offers more than 14 miles of hiking trails, which wander through woods and up the park's eponymous sand dunes.
The Experience
Close to the main parking lot, the park's interpretive center is a helpful resource for trail maps and brochures describing area birds, plant life, even fungi (amanita virosa, anyone?). Trails meander past replicated sites of eight different Indian settlements; for a great view of the area, follow the Red Trail through lush foliage up to Old Baldy, the tallest dune in the park at 93 feet.

Insider Tips
What it CostsWisconsin residents can purchase a day pass for $5 or an annual pass for $20, which is good for admission to all Wisconsin state parks for a year. Out-of-staters pay $10 and $30, respectively.
Beware of Poison IvyWander off any of the trails and you risk an itchy encounter with the stuff. Close-toed shoes are a good idea here.
Danger: Rip CurrentsLake Michigan can produce severe rip currents within 200 yards of the beach. When large waves are present, don't go into water more than waist deep. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore.
