Editorial Review for Washington Island Ferry Line – by J.P. Anderson
Overview
From Northport Pier, at the end of Hwy. 42, it's an easy 30-minute ferry ride to Washington Island. The island covers 22 square miles, most of it easily explored in a day. Since town is three miles from the Detroit Harbor dock, you'll need a way to get around. If you've got a car, ferry it over; the freedom to explore the island's uncrowded roads make it well worth the extra $22 charge. You can also rent a bike on the ferry dock, or take a Cherry Train Tour (details at ticket booth).
The Appeal
Rolling fields of farmland cover much of the island, and the whole place is ringed with thick fir trees, obscuring most water views. Climb the steps to the top of Mountain Park and Lookout Tower. Don't miss Schoolhouse Beach, this popular hangout also offers swimming and picnic areas.
