Editorial Review for Door County Historical Museum – by J.P. Anderson
The Scene
Set in a Scandinavian-style building with lovely woodwork and pretty stained-glass windows, the Door County Historical Museum exudes provincial charm. Volunteers greet visitors enthusiastically and are all too eager to answer questions about the varied assortment of exhibits. Best of all, it's free--though there is a recommended donation of $2 per adult to keep the place going.
The Collection
Three large rooms hold an array of colorful displays. Just inside the front door, there's an in-progress diorama of area wildlife, featuring taxidermic deer, a black bear and many bird species. And The Pioneer Fire Company replicates an entire turn-of-the-century fire station, including a horse-drawn water pumper from 1869. Other exhibits illustrate the area's industrial history, including cherry-picking, quarrying and ice-making, with photos and other artifacts.
