Editorial Review for Cana Island Lighthouse – by J.P. Anderson
Overview
Just north of Baileys Harbor, this striking 89-foot-high lighthouse was built in 1869 and is still an active navigation aid for ships in Lake Michigan. Though it sits on Cana Island, you don't have to walk on water to pay a visit: A rocky tongue of land connects the island to the mainland, except when water is high. Parking is limited and this place gets crowded, so plan on arriving early in the day.
The Experience
Inside the lighthouse keeper's dwelling, you'll find exhibits about the history of the structure, along with photographs, a video and a souvenir shop. Outside, families relax under shady trees on the charming, grassy grounds or wander beyond the surrounding trees to take photos on the rocky shore.
